No resentment or bitterness disturbed her expression, for long ago Nell had scorned the notion of self-pity. God dealt the cards and one played the hand one was dealt. It availed naught to rail against the luck of the throw. She had examined her cards and had been grateful she hadn't drawn worse. There was much for which to be thankful.
