Amalie Howard Books in Order: All 20 Titles

Amalie Howard is a USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling novelist who writes adult historical romance, adult romantasy, and young adult and middle grade fiction, all under her own name. She grew up in Trinidad, studied French and International Studies at Colby College in Maine, and now lives in Colorado. Her historical romances are Regency-set and are notable for centring BIPOC heroes and heroines, several of them drawn from real historical figures: The Princess Stakes was inspired by Sophia Duleep Singh, Rules for Heiresses by Dido Elizabeth Belle, and The Duke in Question by Mary Richards Bowser. Her first four historicals, the Lords of Essex series, were co-written with Angie Morgan and began in 2016; she has since written solo series for Entangled, Sourcebooks Casablanca and Hachette's Forever imprint. Her young adult work has been a Kids' IndieNext pick and a Target Book Club read.

Do you have to read Amalie Howard in order?

Every Amalie Howard historical romance is a self-contained romance with its own couple and its own ending, and the series are linked by friendship groups and family rather than by a continuing plot, so you can start with whichever premise appeals. Within a series, publication order is the sensible reading order because earlier couples reappear as secondary characters. The two co-written series with Angie Morgan came first and read a little differently from her solo work; if you want the Amalie Howard voice that readers talk about now, begin with The Beast of Beswick or Always Be My Duchess. If you find her through the romantasy The Starlight Heir, be aware that is a different genre entirely and connects to none of the historicals.

Genres and eras: Amalie Howard writes in three distinct areas under the same name, and only one of them belongs on a historical romance list. (1) Adult Regency historical romance, 2016 to date - five series plus independent novellas, the body of work catalogued in this file. (2) Adult romantasy - the Starkeeper duology, The Starlight Heir (2025) and Queen of the Night Sky (2026), which are epic fantasy romance inspired by Indian and Persian mythology, not historical. (3) Young adult and middle grade fantasy and contemporary - the Cruentus Curse trilogy (Bloodspell 2011, Bloodcraft 2015, Bloodbound 2017), the Aquarathi trilogy (Waterfell 2013, Oceanborn 2014, SeaMonster 2014), the Riven Chronicles (The Almost Girl 2013, The Fallen Prince 2016), the Alpha Goddess duo (Alpha Goddess 2014, Dark Goddess 2018), the Diamonds series (Queen Bee 2023, Lady Knight 2025, Rebel Heiress 2026) and the middle grade Bumps in the Night (2024). None of these are historical romance and none are included in the count above.

Pen names: Amalie Howard — She publishes everything under her own name across every genre: adult historical romance, adult romantasy, young adult and middle grade. No pen names found.; Angie Morgan (co-author, not a pen name) — Seven of Howard's historical romances are co-written with Angie Morgan and credited to both authors. Morgan writes young adult separately as Page Morgan. Books credited to Page Morgan alone are not Amalie Howard's and are not listed here.

Where to start with Amalie Howard

The Beast of Beswick

The book that broke her out in historical romance, a Beauty and the Beast marriage-of-convenience that works completely on its own.

Always Be My Duchess

The opener of The Taming of the Dukes, her most widely reviewed series and the easiest entry point for readers coming from mainstream Regency romance.

The Princess Stakes

The best single example of what makes her historicals distinctive, with a heroine inspired by Sophia Duleep Singh and a sea-voyage setting.

Frequently asked questions

Do Amalie Howard's books need to be read in order?

No. Each historical romance is a complete standalone with its own couple. Reading a series in publication order is worth doing because earlier heroes and heroines turn up as secondary characters, but nothing ends on a cliffhanger and you can start with any book.

Does Amalie Howard write young adult books as well as historical romance?

Yes, and under the same name. Alongside her Regency historicals she has written several young adult fantasy series, including the Cruentus Curse, Aquarathi, Riven Chronicles, Alpha Goddess and Diamonds books, plus a middle grade title. They are separate from her adult romance and share no characters or settings with it.

Is The Starlight Heir a historical romance?

No. The Starlight Heir (2025) and its sequel Queen of the Night Sky (2026) are adult romantasy, an epic fantasy romance duology inspired by Indian and Persian mythology. They are not connected to any of her Regency series.

Which Amalie Howard books are co-written?

Seven, all with Angie Morgan: the four Lords of Essex novels and the three Tartans & Titans novels. Everything from The Beast of Beswick (2019) onward is written by Amalie Howard alone.

What is the Taming of the Dukes reading order?

Always Be My Duchess (2022), Never Met a Duke Like You (2023), The Worst Duke in London (2024) and the novella Only Earl in the World (2025). Howard describes the series as 1990s rom-coms in Regency dress.

Where should I start with Amalie Howard's historical romance?

The Beast of Beswick if you want the book that made her name in the subgenre, or Always Be My Duchess if you want her most recent and most widely reviewed series. Both are standalones.

Are Amalie Howard's historical romances Regency?

Almost all of them. The Regency Rogues, Daring Dukes, The Taming of the Dukes and Lords of Essex are Regency-set; Tartans & Titans is Scottish Highland historical romance set in the 1800s. She does not write Victorian or medieval romance.

How this list was counted

This guide lists 20 titles — 18 across 5 series and 2 outside them. 20 adult historical romance titles: 17 full-length novels and 3 novellas, first published between 2016 and 2025. Seven of the novels (the Lords of Essex quartet and the Tartans & Titans trilogy) are co-written with Angie Morgan and credited to both authors. This number deliberately excludes her adult romantasy (the Starkeeper duology) and all of her young adult and middle grade fiction, which together add roughly seventeen further titles; see genre_split and notes. It also excludes the anthology volumes themselves, counting only Howard's own novella inside each.

Two independent aggregators (bookseriesinorder.com and booknotification.com) and a third (mostrecommendedbooks.com) agree on every year given above for the numbered series, and Open Library independently confirms Sweet Home Highlander 2018, A Lord for the Lass 2018, What a Scot Wants 2019, The Beast of Beswick 2019, Rules for Heiresses 2021, The Duke in Question 2022, Always Be My Duchess 2022, Never Met a Duke Like You 2023 and Any Duke in a Storm 2024. Two points of disagreement were found. First, Open Library dates The Wolf of Westmore to 2021 while all three aggregators say 2022; 2022 is used here. Second, The Princess Stakes was published by Sourcebooks Casablanca on 29 June 2021, which is the date used, but an earlier Kindle edition exists under the alternative title The Duke's Princess Bride, and mostrecommendedbooks lists The Duke's Princess Bride (2021) as if it were a separate book. It is the same novel and is not listed twice here. Two titles are listed with a null year because their existence is confirmed on Howard's own website but no publication date could be verified from an independent source: A Most Extraordinary Match, her contribution to a Bookish Box winter anthology, and Lady Waverly's Lover, a sapphic novella in the Pride Not Prejudice charity anthology, which one source dates to the June 2023 Oliver-Heber volume but which could not be confirmed. A null year was preferred to a guess. bookseriesinorder also lists an anthology called Big Duke Energy (2022) under her name; her contribution to it could not be verified and it has been left out. All young adult, middle grade and romantasy titles are named in genre_split but excluded from the series list and the total, because this is a historical romance reference.
