The device that makes this series work

Most sibling series are a queue: each book waits politely for its turn. Sabrina Jeffries put a deadline on hers, and it changes everything. The ultimatum is issued in chapter one of book one and it applies to all five siblings simultaneously. So while Oliver is being married off in book one, the other four are visibly running out of time in the background — negotiating, stalling, plotting, and getting steadily more desperate. By book four the pressure is genuinely funny. By book five it has become something else.

Running underneath it is the reason the Sharpes turned out the way they did. Nineteen years earlier their parents died at a hunting lodge, and the official account — a shooting accident, or worse — has never been examined by anyone in the family. Each novel turns up one more inconvenient fact. The last one names what happened.

The five Sharpes, in order

1. The Truth About Lord Stoneville (2010) — Oliver, the eldest and the marquess, who reacts to his grandmother's ultimatum by hiring an American merchant's daughter to pose as his fiancée and horrify the old woman into backing down. Maria Butterfield is not horrified by anything, which ruins his plan immediately.
2. A Hellion in Her Bed (2010) — Jarret, the gambler, who wins a wager against his grandmother and finds himself running the family brewery for a year. Annabel Lake wants his help saving her own family's brewery and is lying to him about why.
3. How to Woo a Reluctant Lady (2011) — Minerva writes lurid gothic novels in which a character suspiciously resembling Giles Masters is always the villain. She advertises for a husband to spite her grandmother; Giles applies. The most enjoyable banter in the series.
4. To Wed a Wild Lord (2011) — Gabriel, the reckless one, who races carriages on the road that killed a friend, and Virginia Waverly, that friend's sister, who blames him entirely. The angstiest entry and the one where the parents' deaths start to properly surface.
5. A Lady Never Surrenders (2012) — Celia, the youngest, a crack shot, and Jackson Pinter, the Bow Street investigator who has been quietly digging into the family for four books while being very rude to her. The mystery closes here, and it closes properly.

Why order is not optional here

Two reasons, both structural. First, the clock: each book covers a slice of the same twelve months, so the siblings' marital status changes between instalments and reading out of sequence means characters are inexplicably married. Second, the investigation: Jackson Pinter is on the page from book one, gathering evidence you are shown but not explained. Book five is the payoff for four books of accumulated detail. Start there and it is a decent romantic suspense novel; read it fifth and it is the answer to a question you have been carrying for two thousand pages.

Grandmother Hetty deserves her own paragraph

She is the best character in the series and she is not a hero in any of the five books. A brewery heiress who married up, buried her daughter, and raised five traumatised grandchildren badly, Hetty is manipulative, unrepentant and completely aware that the ultimatum is emotional blackmail. Jeffries lets her be right and wrong at once. If you have read a lot of matchmaking-grandmother romances and found them saccharine, this is the corrective.
