The Highland Guard in Order

The error is consistent: two novellas get numbered as full books, which inflates the series to fourteen novels and pushes every subsequent number out of step. It is twelve novels plus two shorter works. The order below has them in their correct places.

Each hero is named for his specialism, which makes the titles unusually easy to keep straight:

1. The Chief (2010) — Tor MacLeod, recruited to lead the Guard, and a forced marriage he did not agree to. Establishes the unit and the campaign.
2. The Hawk (2010) — Erik MacSorley, the seafarer, and a shipwrecked nun who is not a nun.
3. The Ranger (2010) — Arthur Campbell, working as a spy inside an enemy household.
4. The Viper (2011) — Lachlan MacRuairi, the least trustworthy man in the unit, and the wife he abandoned.
5. The Saint (2012) — Magnus MacKay and Helen — a childhood friendship and a healer's skill in the middle of a war.
6. The Recruit (2012) — Kenneth Sutherland, arriving late and having to earn a place among men who have already bled together.
7. The Hunter (2013) — Ewen Lamont, tracker, escorting a woman he has every reason to distrust.
8. The Knight (2013) — A novella — shorter, released digitally, and sitting between the seventh and eighth novels.
9. The Raider (2014) — Robbie Boyd, whose hatred of the English is personal, and an Englishwoman. The hardest-edged book in the series.
10. The Arrow (2014) — Gregor MacGregor, the archer, and the woman who has waited too long for him to notice.
11. The Striker (2015) — Eoin MacLean and a marriage broken by a betrayal that took years to surface.
12. The Rock (2015) — Thom MacGowan, the blacksmith's son, and a nobleman's daughter — the series' clearest class-divide romance.
13. The Rogue (2016) — The second novella, following the eleventh novel.
14. The Ghost (2016) — Alex Seton and Joan Comyn. The final book, and it closes the campaign as well as the romance.

Twelve novels and two novellas. If a list you are reading shows fourteen numbered novels, it has promoted The Knight and The Rogue and everything after them is misnumbered.

Does the order matter?

Yes, more than in most historical romance series. The Guard operates as a continuing unit through a real historical campaign that moves forward book by book — sieges happen, allegiances change, men die. Individual romances resolve, but the war does not restart for each one.

Reading out of order means encountering the outcome of a battle before the book that fights it. Start with The Chief.

How much history is in it?

A surprising amount, and it is one of the reasons the series has lasted. Robert the Bruce's campaign is treated as the actual plot rather than as scenery: the reversals, the years in hiding, the slow reconquest and the specific tactics of a small force fighting a much larger one all shape what the heroes are doing in any given book.

The trade-off is that the romances often take second place to the mission. Readers who want ballroom courtship will find this a different genre; readers who want their Highlanders muddy and busy will find very little else like it.
