Laura Kinsale Books in Order: The Complete Reading Guide

Laura Kinsale wrote only twelve novels, but ask serious romance readers to name the genre's most emotionally devastating books and several will be hers. Medieval knights, Georgian highwaymen, a duke recovering from a stroke — her range is astonishing. Here is every Kinsale novel in publication order, which ones connect, and exactly where a newcomer should begin.

Kinsale is a standalone author, not a series author. Her novels leap across centuries and settings, each one a self-contained, richly researched world. That means order barely matters — you can pick up whichever premise calls to you. The one exception is her medieval duology, which shares characters and is best read in sequence. Here is the full list.

All 12 Laura Kinsale novels in publication order

  1. The Hidden Heart (1986) — her debut, a Victorian adventure romance with an expedition and a naturalist heroine.
  2. Uncertain Magic (1987) — a Georgian Irish romance with a hero who can read minds and a heroine no one else will have.
  3. Midsummer Moon (1987) — a whimsical Regency featuring an inventor heroine, a hedgehog, and a hero convinced she needs rescuing.
  4. Seize the Fire (1989) — an epic, globe-spanning romance with a disillusioned war hero and an exiled princess; famously ambitious.
  5. The Prince of Midnight (1990) — a RITA-winning Georgian adventure: a retired highwayman, a revenge-bent heroine, and a wolf named Nemo.
  6. The Shadow and the Star (1991) — a dark, tender Victorian romance about a damaged, disciplined hero and the woman who reaches him. A perennial favourite.
  7. Flowers from the Storm (1992) — her masterpiece. A rakish duke is felled by a stroke and confined to an asylum; a devout Quaker woman becomes his lifeline. Widely named one of the greatest romances ever written.
  8. For My Lady's Heart (1993) — a lush medieval romance written partly in Middle English cadence, pairing a knight with a Byzantine princess. First of her medieval duology.
  9. The Dream Hunter (1994) — a desert adventure and drawing-room romance about a wandering hero and the woman disguised among his caravan.
  10. My Sweet Folly (1997) — an epistolary-tinged Regency about two people who fall in love by letter before they ever meet.
  11. Shadowheart (2004) — the darker, fiercer sequel to For My Lady's Heart, following a ruthless assassin and the woman he claims. Second of the medieval duology.
  12. Lessons in French (2010) — her lightest, most comedic novel: childhood sweethearts, a runaway bull, and a warm second-chance romance.

Which books connect?

Only one pairing. For My Lady's Heart (1993) and Shadowheart (2004) form a loose medieval duology set in the same world, sharing characters and threads. Read For My Lady's Heart first, then Shadowheart, to get the full arc. Every other Kinsale novel stands entirely on its own.

Where to start

Start with Flowers from the Storm. It is her most acclaimed book, the one readers press into friends' hands, and a complete emotional experience from the first page. If a stroke-recovery premise feels heavy for a first read, The Shadow and the Star and The Prince of Midnight are gentler on-ramps that still show off her gift for wounded heroes and hard-won tenderness. Save the medieval duology for when you want to sink into something epic. Whatever you choose, know that Kinsale rewards patience — her books unfold slowly and hit hard.
