Lorraine Heath Books in Order: All 56 Titles
Lorraine Heath is an American historical romance novelist, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England to a British mother and a Texan father serving with the US Air Force at Bovingdon, and raised in Texas. She took a BA in psychology at the University of Texas and wrote training manuals and code for the IRS before selling her first novel, Sweet Lullaby, which was published in 1994. She spent her first decade writing American West historical romance, then moved to Victorian London from around 2004 and has written interlinked Victorian series ever since - the Scoundrels of St. James, Lost Lords of Pembrook, Sins for All Seasons and others. She won the 1997 RITA Award for Best Short Historical Romance for Always to Remember and has been a RITA finalist at least seven further times; she received the RT Book Reviews Career Achievement Award and Pioneer of Romance Award in 2016. She is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author and also writes young-adult fiction as Rachel Hawthorne, Jade Parker and J.A. London.
Do you have to read Lorraine Heath in order?
Almost every Lorraine Heath book has a self-contained romance, so you can start anywhere, but two chains reward being read in order. The Scoundrels of St. James (2008-2014) and the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James (2014-2024) are one continuous story across two generations, so read Scoundrels first. The Hellions of Havisham novella When the Marquess Falls is written as both prequel and epilogue and gives away the outcome of all three novels, so read it last rather than first. The Texas Trilogy and Daughters of Fortune should each be read in order because siblings' plots carry over; everything else stands alone comfortably.
Genres and eras: Two clear phases, both historical romance. From 1994 to about 2004 she wrote American West and Texas-set historicals - the Texas Trilogy, Rogues in Texas and several standalones. From The Lost Lords (2005) onward she has written almost exclusively Victorian-set British historical romance, and the Victorian series are heavily interlinked. Outside historical romance she has written two contemporary romances, two young-adult westerns, and two works of historical fiction: Girls of Flight City (2022), a WWII novel about American women who trained RAF pilots in Texas, and Reflections from the Water (2019), a self-published family-history novel. Her young-adult work appears under three separate pen names.
Pen names: Rachel Hawthorne — Young-adult contemporary and paranormal romance, including the Dark Guardian werewolf series and the Year Abroad books. No adult historical romance under this name.; Jade Parker — Young-adult romance, including To Catch a Pirate (2007) and the Making a Splash trio (2008).; J.A. London — Young-adult paranormal, the Darkness Before Dawn vampire trilogy (2012-2013), co-written with her son.

Where to start with Lorraine Heath
In Bed with the Devil
The book that made her a Victorian-romance name, and the opening of her two best-connected series.
Texas Destiny
The best entry point to her American West phase, and still the most recommended of her early historicals.
Beyond Scandal and Desire
The opener of Sins for All Seasons, her most consistently praised recent series, and it needs no prior reading.
Always to Remember
Her 1997 RITA winner and a self-contained post-Civil-War standalone if you want one book only.
Frequently asked questions
Do Lorraine Heath's books have to be read in order?
No. Each novel resolves its own romance and most work as standalones. The exceptions worth respecting are the Scoundrels of St. James and its sequel series the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James, which run as one continuous family story, and the Hellions of Havisham novella When the Marquess Falls, which spoils the trilogy it belongs to.
How many books has Lorraine Heath written?
Around 56 adult historical romances under her own name, plus two contemporary romances, two young-adult westerns and two works of historical fiction, taking the Lorraine Heath total to roughly 62. She has written a further two dozen or so young-adult books under the pen names Rachel Hawthorne, Jade Parker and J.A. London.
What order do the St. James books go in?
Read the Scoundrels of St. James first: In Bed with the Devil, Between the Devil and Desire, Surrender to the Devil, Midnight Pleasures with a Scoundrel and the novella The Last Wicked Scoundrel. Then the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James, which follows their children: When the Duke Was Wicked, Once More My Darling Rogue, The Duke and the Lady in Red, An Affair with a Notorious Heiress, the novella Gentlemen Prefer Heiresses, and A Tempest of Desire.
Are Lorraine Heath's books Regency or Victorian?
Victorian, mostly. From The Lost Lords in 2005 onwards her British-set series are set in Victorian London rather than the Regency, even though they are shelved alongside Regency romance. Her earlier books from 1994 to 2004 are American West historicals set after the Civil War.
What is Lorraine Heath's most popular series?
The Scoundrels of St. James, about five children raised as thieves in the London rookeries who rise into society, is the most widely read. Sins for All Seasons, about the Trewlove siblings, is the most popular of her later series.
Is Girls of Flight City a romance?
No. Girls of Flight City (2022) is World War II historical fiction, based on real events at a Texas flight school that trained British RAF pilots. It is not part of any of her Victorian series and is not marketed as a romance.
Is Lorraine Heath still writing?
Yes, though slowly. A Tempest of Desire, the fifth Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James book, came out in December 2024, and a sixth book in that series has been announced. Her publisher schedule slipped from 2025 into 2026, which she has attributed to health reasons.
How this list was counted
This guide lists 56 titles — 50 across 13 series and 6 outside them. 56 adult historical romance titles published as Lorraine Heath: 50 full-length novels and 6 novellas, across the 13 series listed below plus 4 standalone novels and 2 anthology novellas. Deliberately excluded: the two contemporary romances Hard Lovin' Man (2003) and Smooth Talkin' Stranger (2004); the two young-adult historical westerns Samantha and the Cowboy (2002) and Amelia and the Outlaw (2003); the non-romance historical fiction Girls of Flight City (2022) and Reflections from the Water (2019); everything written as Rachel Hawthorne, Jade Parker or J.A. London; and reissue bundles and anthologies that reprint work already counted. Counting those excluded adult and YA titles as well would give roughly 62 books under the Lorraine Heath name.
bookseriesinorder.com lists a 'Sons and Daughters' series of six 1995-96 titles under Heath's name. Only the first, The Ladies' Man (1995), is hers; The Wallflower is by Linda Francis Lee, The Matchmaker by Debra S. Cowan and The Flirt by Rachelle Nelson. The other titles in that entry are not hers and have been dropped, with The Ladies' Man moved to standalones. Long Stretch of Lonesome (1999) is the same story later reissued alone as the ebook The Gunslinger; some databases date it 2014 from that reissue, but first publication was in the anthology To Tame a Texan in 1999, and it is counted once. The Reluctant Hero first appeared in the anthology My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys (March 2006) and was reissued as an ebook in 2015; Wikipedia dates it 2006 and bookseriesinorder 2015, and 2006 is used here. Between the Devil and Desire is dated December 2008 by Goodreads and January 2009 by Wikipedia; 2008 is used. Deck the Halls With Love is dated 2012 by Goodreads and February 2013 by Wikipedia; 2012 is used. Goodreads also lists the multi-author anthology A Christmas to Remember (2017) inside the Lost Lords of Pembrook series; it is an anthology rather than a new Heath title and is excluded. Wikipedia lists a 2010 short piece called An Invitation to Scandal that could not be confirmed anywhere else, so it is omitted. Texas Legacy is numbered 3.5 and runs under 200 pages; it is recorded as a novel because it was published as a standalone paperback, but it is much shorter than her main-series books. Lorraine Heath's own website is JavaScript-driven and its book pages returned no readable content, so the spine here is Wikipedia's bibliography cross-checked against Goodreads series pages, RomanceWiki's award records and retailer listings rather than the author's own site.
