Mary Balogh Books in Order: All 122 Titles

Mary Balogh is a Welsh-Canadian historical romance novelist, born Mary Jenkins in Swansea on 24 March 1944. She moved to Canada in 1967 on a two-year teaching contract, married, settled in Kipling, Saskatchewan, and taught high-school English, eventually becoming a school principal, while writing in the evenings. Her debut, A Masked Deception, was accepted by Signet and published in 1985, winning that year's Romantic Times award for best new Regency writer; she has published continuously since, moving from short traditional Signet Regencies in the 1980s and 1990s to longer sensual historicals for Delacorte and Berkley from 1999 onward. She is a New York Times bestselling author, has published more than ninety novels and around thirty novellas, and received a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Regency short stories in 1993. Her work is set almost entirely in Regency or Georgian England and Wales, and she is unusual in the subgenre for writing heroines who are courtesans, illegitimate or socially ruined.

Do you have to read Mary Balogh in order?

Nothing in Mary Balogh's catalogue has to be read in order and every book resolves its own romance, but four chains genuinely reward it. Read One Night for Love and A Summer to Remember before the six Bedwyn books, because they introduce the family and the Duke of Bewcastle's arc pays off in Slightly Dangerous. Read the Bedwyn saga before the Simply quartet, which spins out of it. Read the Westcott series strictly in order, because the consequences of the first book's revelation drive all nine. And read Remember Love before the rest of Ravenswood, whose last two books cross over into the Westcott family. The Mistress trilogy is the one series where publication order and chronological order differ: The Secret Mistress (2011) is a prequel to More Than a Mistress (2000), and most readers prefer publication order. The eighty-odd short traditional Signet Regencies from 1985 to 1998 are a separate world - shorter, gentler and far less explicit - and are not a prerequisite for anything.

Genres and eras: Regency-set historical romance throughout, with a handful of Georgian-set books (Heartless, Silent Melody) and one Napoleonic-war novel (Beyond the Sunrise). Two clear phases: roughly 1985 to 1998 she wrote short traditional Regencies for Signet, published four or five a year, and from One Night for Love (1999) onward she has written longer, more sensual single-title historicals for Delacorte, Bantam Dell and Berkley. She has written nothing outside historical romance apart from one non-fiction essay, and has never used another name.

Pen names: Mary Balogh — She has published everything under this name. Born Mary Jenkins; Balogh is her married surname, not a pen name, and there is no separate body of work under any other name. The only title complication is that her 1985 debut A Masked Deception was also issued as Desire After Dark as a Prince Matchabelli perfume promotion - the same book under two titles, not a pen name.

The Ravenswood Series in order (2022-2026)

Her current series. Balogh's own book list marks the last two titles as crossovers that bring the Ravenswood and Westcott families together. A Waltz to Remember is scheduled for 27 October 2026 and had not yet been published on the verification date.

Where to start with Mary Balogh

Slightly Dangerous

The Duke of Bewcastle's book and the one most often named her best, though it lands harder if you read the five Bedwyn books before it.

Someone to Love

The opening of the Westcott series, her most popular modern run and the most self-explanatory entry point for a new reader.

The Secret Pearl

A standalone 1991 novel with no series obligations and the clearest example of the ruined-heroine story she is known for.

The Proposal

Book one of the Survivors' Club, a complete seven-book series about Napoleonic War convalescents, if you want a finished run to work through.

Frequently asked questions

Do Mary Balogh's books need to be read in order?

Not across her whole catalogue - each book resolves its own romance and the series stand apart from each other. Within a series it is worth reading in order, especially the Westcott books, where the consequences of the first book drive all nine, and the Bedwyn saga, which builds towards Slightly Dangerous.

What is the Bedwyn series reading order?

Read the two prequels first: One Night for Love (1999) and A Summer to Remember (2002). Then Slightly Married, Slightly Wicked and Slightly Scandalous (all 2003), then Slightly Tempted, Slightly Sinful and Slightly Dangerous (all 2004). The much later novella Another Dream (2019) is a Bedwyn story and comes last.

What order should I read the Westcott series?

Someone to Love (2016), Someone to Hold (2017), Someone to Wed (2017), Someone to Care (2018), Someone to Trust (2018), Someone to Honor (2019), the novella Someone to Remember (2019), Someone to Romance (2020), Someone to Cherish (2021) and Someone Perfect (2021). This is the series where order matters most.

How many books has Mary Balogh written?

123 works of original fiction between 1985 and 2026: 93 novels and 30 novellas. Exact counts vary between sources because many of her early Signet Regencies were later reissued, retitled or packaged two to a volume, and a single novella can appear in three or four different anthologies.

Is the Ravenswood series finished?

Almost. Five of the six Ravenswood novels are out - Remember Love (2022), Remember Me (2023), Always Remember (2024), Remember When (2025) and Remember That Day (2026) - and the sixth, A Waltz to Remember, is scheduled for 27 October 2026. The last two books cross over with the Westcott family.

Are the Bedwyn books connected to the Simply series?

Yes. The Simply quartet is set at Miss Martin's School for Girls in Bath, which is secretly funded by the Duke of Bewcastle, and Bedwyn characters appear throughout. Read the Bedwyn saga first, though the Simply books do work on their own.

What is the difference between Mary Balogh's old Signet Regencies and her newer books?

Her books from 1985 to about 1998 are traditional Regencies: short, published by Signet, largely closed-door, and often standalone. From One Night for Love (1999) onward she has written longer, more sensual single-title historicals for Delacorte, Bantam Dell and Berkley, and those are the books the Bedwyn, Simply, Huxtable, Survivors' Club, Westcott and Ravenswood series belong to.

How this list was counted

This guide lists 122 titles — 67 across 16 series and 55 outside them. 123 works of original fiction first published between 1985 and 2026: 93 full-length novels and 30 novellas or short stories. Each title is counted once, at its original publication, so a Signet Regency later reissued in a two-in-one volume or as an e-book is counted once, and a novella first printed in a multi-author anthology and later reprinted in one of Balogh's own collections is counted once, at first printing. A Christmas Bride (1997) belongs to two of her series and is counted once, in the Dark Angel series. Deliberately excluded from the count: all reissues and retitlings; the two-in-one omnibus volumes (for example The Temporary Wife/A Promise of Spring, The Famous Heroine/The Plumed Bonnet, A Counterfeit Betrothal/The Notorious Rake, The Christmas Bride/Christmas Beau); the multi-author anthologies themselves, as opposed to Balogh's contribution to them; and the seven Balogh-only reprint collections (Under the Mistletoe 2003, Christmas Miracles 2015, Christmas Gifts 2015, A Rogue's Downfall 2017, No Ordinary Love 2017, A Day for Love 2018, Second Chances 2019) - though the two brand-new novellas that first appeared inside them, A Family Christmas and Another Dream, are counted.

This file uses Mary Balogh's own printable book list (the 2026 edition on marybalogh.com) as the spine for series membership and title coverage, and Wikipedia's bibliography for publication years, cross-checked against bookseriesinorder and FictionDB. Coverage is complete for every named series and for the single novels; the novella coverage is complete for first publications as listed on Wikipedia but is the part most likely to be missing a stray title, because Balogh contributed to a large number of 1990s multi-author anthologies and several novellas have been reprinted under different anthology titles since. Known ambiguities and decisions. (1) The title A Daring Masquerade is given without the article as 'Daring Masquerade' on Balogh's own printable list, but her website's own book page for it, and the databases, use 'A Daring Masquerade'. (2) A Masked Deception (1985) was also issued as Desire After Dark as a Prince Matchabelli perfume promotion - the only Balogh title published under two names. (3) Balogh's 2026 printable book list omits Someone to Romance (2020) from the Westcott column, which is an error on her list: the book is on her own website's series page and is included here at position 7. (4) Her printable list also omits her earliest series numbering entirely, so the Waite, Frazer and Mainwaring series names come from Wikipedia and the databases, not from her; she groups those titles as 'related books' instead. (5) A Christmas Bride (1997) belongs to two series and her own list flags this; it is listed once, under the Dark Angel series. (6) Wikipedia places The Proposal (2012) in both the Bedwyn prequels and the Survivors' Club; it belongs to the Survivors' Club and is listed there only. (7) Years for her own reprint collections, which are not counted: Under the Mistletoe 2003, Christmas Miracles 2015, Christmas Gifts 2015, A Rogue's Downfall 2017, No Ordinary Love 2017, A Day for Love 2018, Second Chances 2019. (8) A Waltz to Remember (27 October 2026) is forthcoming as of the 7 September 2026 verification date and is included as an announced title, not a published one. (9) Wikipedia's own summary line still says 'more than 60 novels and over 30 novellas', which is out of date; the 93-novel figure here is a direct count of the titles listed in this file.
