The Ravenels in Order: Kleypas's Victorian Family Saga

The short answer on the Wallflowers question

No, you do not need them. The Ravenels opens cold with a dead earl, a bankrupt estate and three sisters nobody knows what to do with, and it explains itself perfectly well. Two of the seven books, however, star the adult children of Sebastian and Evie from the Wallflowers, and those two carry a substantial bonus for anyone who has met the parents. Sebastian at fifty, terrifying everyone and utterly besotted with his wife, is the reward Kleypas built for long-term readers. You will still enjoy the books without it. You just will not get the lump in your throat.

The seven novels in order

1. Cold-Hearted Rake (2015) — Devon Ravenel inherits an earldom he never wanted, along with a ruined estate, a widow he is legally obliged to house, and three feral sisters-in-law. The setup book for everything that follows, and the one that establishes the series' unusual interest in agriculture, drainage and money.
2. Marrying Winterborne (2016) — Helen Ravenel and the Welsh department-store magnate Rhys Winterborne. Gentle heroine, roughest hero in the series, and a secret about Helen's parentage that reshapes her family.
3. Devil in Spring (2017) — Pandora Ravenel, who wants to run a board-game company rather than marry anyone, and Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent — Sebastian and Evie's son. The first crossover, and the one where the old guard walks back on stage.
4. Hello Stranger (2018) — Dr Garrett Gibson, one of the first women licensed to practise medicine in England, and Ethan Ransom, a Home Office man in trouble. A thriller wearing a romance's clothes, and the outlier of the series.
5. Devil's Daughter (2019) — Phoebe, Sebastian and Evie's widowed daughter, and West Ravenel, the reformed wastrel of book one who spent years turning himself into a decent land agent. Widely held to be the best in the run.
6. Chasing Cassandra (2020) — Pandora's twin, and the railway tycoon Tom Severin, who has been circling the family for four books and does not believe he is capable of love. He is wrong, but it takes him a while.
7. Devil in Disguise (2021) — Merritt Sterling and the Scottish distiller Keir MacRae, whose parentage ties the two series together in the last way anyone expected. The closing note, and a deliberate one.

A short seasonal piece, A Ravenels Christmas Novella, sits between the earlier books as a warm interlude; nothing depends on it.

Why this series feels different from the Wallflowers

Two decades separate them in-world, and it shows. The Wallflowers are Victorian-era but ballroom-shaped: seasons, pacts, marriage marts. The Ravenels are about work — a failing estate that has to be dragged into profitability, a department store, a railway empire, a woman fighting to practise surgery. Kleypas spends real page-count on drainage schemes and clinic hours, and the romances grow out of competence rather than proximity. Readers who found the earlier series a touch confectionery often prefer this one; readers who came for ballrooms occasionally do not.

Reading order versus publication order

They are the same, and there is no chronological alternative worth pursuing. Book one leaves an entire cast unresolved, book two picks up almost immediately, and the twins' books reference each other constantly. The only genuinely detachable entry is Hello Stranger, whose leads are family friends rather than Ravenels — read it late if you want, but do not skip it, because Garrett Gibson is one of the best heroines Kleypas has written.
