Stephanie Laurens Books in Order: The Cynster Reading Guide

Let's be honest: Stephanie Laurens's backlist is not a series, it is a continent. The Cynster family alone spans decades of books, and that is before you meet the Bastion Club. Deep breath — you do not need to read everything. Here is the core Cynster order, the Cynster family tree (who is whose cousin, and who marries whom), the Bastion Club order, and a sane path for newcomers.

The heart of it all is the Bar Cynster: six male cousins, absurdly wealthy, terrifyingly protective, and (in their own opinion) immune to love. Laurens knocks them down one per book like elegant dominoes, then keeps going — sisters, friends, in-laws, and eventually the next generation. Every book is a complete romance, but publication order is the way in, because each wedding reshapes the family you meet in the next book.

The core Cynster novels in order

Fifteen novels published between 1998 and 2009, beginning with the six Bar Cynster cousins and widening to the family's sisters and circle.

  1. Devil's Bride — Devil, the duke who leads the pack, is caught in a compromising position and simply decides: her.
  2. A Rake's Vow — Vane swears he will never be tamed. A hauntingly practical houseguest disagrees.
  3. Scandal's Bride — Richard heads to the Scottish Highlands and meets a healer who has been told to choose a husband.
  4. A Rogue's Proposal — Demon, his racing stables, and a lady sleuthing in jockey's clothes.
  5. A Secret Love — Gabriel is hired by a veiled woman who refuses to reveal her name. He knows her. He doesn't know he knows her.
  6. All About Love — Lucifer, the last cousin standing, inherits a village mystery and a suspect he would rather court.
  7. All About Passion — A marriage arranged over the wrong bride. Chaos, obviously.
  8. On a Wild Night — The next Cynster generation steps up: Arthur's daughter Amanda goes hunting in London's shadier ballrooms. (Not to be confused with the later Cynster Sisters Trilogy — see the family tree below.)
  9. On a Wicked Dawn — Amanda's twin Amelia takes her turn, with a hero nursing a very old secret.
  10. The Perfect Lover — Simon Cynster and a house-party courtship that turns deadly.
  11. The Ideal Bride — A politician who needs a hostess, and the widow who is definitely not auditioning.
  12. The Truth About Love — Art, portraiture, and a murder to solve.
  13. What Price Love? — Racehorses, ruined reputations, and Dillon Caxton's redemption.
  14. The Taste of Innocence — A proper courtship that turns out to be anything but simple.
  15. Temptation and Surrender — The last of the core run, tying off the generation.

The prequel, The Promise in a Kiss (2001), tells Devil's parents' love story — lovely, but best read after Devil's Bride. Beyond the core fifteen, the family rolls on through the Cynster Sisters books and the Cynster Next Generation novels — well over two dozen books in the wider world, for when you are fully committed.

The Cynster family tree

This is the part everyone gets lost in, so here is the shape of it. Laurens publishes her own official family-tree diagrams, and everything below follows them. The tree has three layers: the parents, the six cousins you came for, and the next generation.

The parent generation

Five Cynster siblings sit at the top of the tree. Between them they produce the entire Bar Cynster:

One wrinkle the tree draws very deliberately: Richard "Scandal" is Devil's illegitimate half-brother, born to Sebastian and Lady Eleanor McEnery and raised as a Cynster. If you have ever wondered why Richard is always slightly outside the pack, that is why.

The six Bar Cynster cousins — who marries whom

The six cousins, their nicknames, and the book in which each one falls:

  1. Sylvester "Devil" Cynster, 6th Duke of St. Ives — Devil's Bride — marries Honoria
  2. Spencer "Vane" CynsterA Rake's Vow — marries Patience
  3. Richard "Scandal" CynsterScandal's Bride — marries Catriona
  4. Harry "Demon" CynsterA Rogue's Proposal — marries Felicity "Flick"
  5. Rupert "Gabriel" CynsterA Secret Love — marries Alathea
  6. Alasdair "Lucifer" CynsterAll About Love — marries Phyllida

The two sets of Cynster sisters (this is the bit that trips people up)

"The Cynster sisters" means two different groups of women, from two different fathers, and almost every list online conflates them:

Several of the mid-run novels also marry Cynsters to the siblings of earlier Cynster spouses, which is how the family keeps folding in on itself: Michael in The Ideal Bride is Honoria's brother, Gerard in The Truth About Love is Patience's brother, Charlie in The Taste of Innocence is Alathea's brother, and Jonas in Temptation and Surrender is Phyllida's brother.

The next generation

The Cynster Next Generation series (fifteen books, opening with By Winter's Light in 2014) follows the Bar Cynster's children. Broadly: Richard and Catriona's children Lucilla and Marcus get the first two novels; Devil and Honoria's three — Sebastian, Michael and Louisa — form the "Devil's Brood" trilogy; Vane and Patience's four and Demon and Flick's four carry the run from there. Gabriel's and Lucifer's children appear on the family tree but have not been given books.

A note on Laurens's own diagram: the Next Generation tree predates the last couple of releases, and the years printed on it are the in-story dates, not publication years. Use it for who-belongs-to-whom, not for a release list.

The Bastion Club in order

Seven war-weary gentlemen (plus one spymaster) form a private club to defend themselves against matchmaking mamas. It goes exactly as well as you would hope. The series is self-contained — same world as the Cynsters, separate story.

  1. The Lady Chosen
  2. A Gentleman's Honor
  3. A Lady of His Own
  4. A Fine Passion
  5. To Distraction
  6. Beyond Seduction
  7. The Edge of Desire
  8. Mastered by Love

Captain Jack's Woman (1997) is the series prequel — written first, set earlier, and readable at any point.

The two worlds are not just adjacent, they eventually intermarry. Devil Cynster turns up in cameo across the Bastion Club books, and the knot is tied properly a generation later: Royce Varisey — "Dalziel", the spymaster, hero of Mastered by Love — has a son, Drake Varisey, who marries Lady Louisa Cynster in The Greatest Challenge of Them All. If you read the Bastion Club first, that payoff lands beautifully.

Where to start (the newcomer path)

Do not try to read everything — start with Devil's Bride. If it works for you (it usually does), read the first six Cynster books as one arc: that is the complete Bar Cynster story, with a beginning, middle, and six weddings. Stop there feeling satisfied, or keep rolling into the sisters' books. Prefer spies and slightly more plot with your kissing? Start the Bastion Club at The Lady Chosen instead — it is shorter, tighter, and just as swoony.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start with Stephanie Laurens?

Start with Devil's Bride, the first Cynster novel. It introduces the Bar Cynster — six devastatingly protective male cousins — and everything else grows outward from there.

How many Cynster books are there?

The core series runs fifteen novels plus the prequel The Promise in a Kiss. With the Cynster Sisters and Next Generation books, the wider world tops two dozen.

Do I need to read the Bastion Club with the Cynster novels?

No — it shares the world but stands alone: eight novels plus the prequel Captain Jack's Woman, readable before, after, or instead of the Cynsters.

Who are the six Bar Cynster cousins?

Devil (Sylvester) marries Honoria in Devil's Bride; Vane (Spencer) marries Patience in A Rake's Vow; Scandal (Richard) marries Catriona in Scandal's Bride; Demon (Harry) marries Flick in A Rogue's Proposal; Gabriel (Rupert) marries Alathea in A Secret Love; and Lucifer (Alasdair) marries Phyllida in All About Love.

How are the Cynsters related to each other?

Five Cynster siblings head the family — Sebastian, Martin, the twins George and Arthur, and Augusta. Devil is Sebastian's son, Gabriel and Lucifer are Martin's, Vane and Demon are George's. Richard "Scandal" is Sebastian's illegitimate son raised as a Cynster, so he is Devil's half-brother.

Are Amanda and Amelia part of the Cynster Sisters Trilogy?

No — that is the most common mix-up. Amanda and Amelia are Arthur's twin daughters (On a Wild Night and On a Wicked Dawn). The Cynster Sisters Trilogy is a separate, later set about Martin's daughters Heather, Eliza and Angelica.
