Jo Beverley Books in Order: The Complete Reading Guide

A five-time RITA winner and one of the great architects of modern historical romance, Jo Beverley built two beloved worlds: the Regency-era Company of Rogues and the glittering, dangerous Georgian Mallorens. If you are meeting her for the first time, here is every book in each series in order, plus where to start.

Do you need to read Beverley in order? Each novel stands alone with its own couple and happy ending. But she is a master of the recurring cast — friends turn up in one another's books, and past events echo forward — so within a series, publication order rewards you most. The two series sit in different eras and can be read completely independently of each other, so pick the world that calls to you.

The Company of Rogues series in order

Beverley's flagship Regency series follows the Rogues — a band of men who met at Harrow and swore lifelong loyalty. As each marries, the others rally round, making this one of romance's great friendship-group series. The core novels, in order:

  1. An Arranged Marriage (1991) — The series opener: a hasty marriage born of scandal, and a hero with a wounded heart. Nicholas Delaney anchors the whole Company.
  2. An Unwilling Bride (1992) — A schoolteacher discovers she is an earl's daughter and is pushed toward a marriage neither party wants.
  3. Christmas Angel (1992) — A widow, a marriage of convenience, and a festive setting.
  4. Forbidden (1994) — A spinster, a viscount, and a scandalous proposition.
  5. Dangerous Joy (1995) — An Irish heiress, a duel of wills, and adventure.
  6. The Demon's Mistress (2001) — A widow rescues a man bent on ruin. Later collected in Three Heroes.
  7. The Dragon's Bride (2001) — A returning earl and the smuggler's daughter he never forgot.
  8. The Devil's Heiress (2001) — An heiress accused of theft and the officer determined to know the truth.
  9. Hazard (2002) — A former mistress and the soldier who won't give up on her.
  10. St. Raven (2003) — A duke moonlighting as a highwayman and a lady on a rescue mission.
  11. Skylark (2004) — A widow, a childhood friend, and a dangerous secret.
  12. The Rogue's Return (2006) — Canada, a hasty marriage, and a journey home.
  13. To Rescue a Rogue (2006) — Opium addiction, healing, and one of the most emotional entries.
  14. Lady Beware (2007) — The long-awaited story of Lady Thea and Lord Darien, closing the core arc.

Beverley returned to this world with several later, more loosely connected Regency novels — A Shocking Delight (2014), Too Dangerous for a Lady (2015), The Viscount Needs a Wife (2016), and Merely a Marriage (2017) — which share the wider "Rogue World" but read comfortably as standalones.

The Malloren series in order (Georgian)

Set a generation before the Rogues, in the candlelit 1760s, the Malloren series is Beverley's most opulent. It follows the powerful Malloren siblings, presided over by the coolly brilliant Marquess of Rothgar. Silk, intrigue, and high stakes.

  1. My Lady Notorious (1993) — A woman in disguise as a highwayman and the man she "abducts." The dazzling series opener.
  2. Tempting Fortune (1995) — A reckless gamble and a heroine determined to protect her family.
  3. Something Wicked (1997) — A revenge plot that turns into something far more tender.
  4. Secrets of the Night (1999) — A woman seeking an heir and the man she chooses in the dark.
  5. Devilish (2000) — Rothgar's own story at last, opposite the equally formidable Countess of Arradale. Widely called the crown jewel of the series.
  6. Winter Fire (2003) — A Christmas marriage of convenience with Malloren connections.
  7. A Most Unsuitable Man (2005) — A follow-on featuring characters from Secrets of the Night.
  8. A Lady's Secret (2008) — A runaway nun-in-disguise and a Malloren cousin on the road to Rothgar Abbey.

Two later Georgian novels, The Secret Wedding (2009) and An Unlikely Countess (2011), continue in the same world and are sometimes grouped with the Mallorens.

Where to start

For Regency readers, begin with An Arranged Marriage and follow the Rogues in order — the friendships build beautifully. For lovers of the earlier Georgian glamour, start with My Lady Notorious and save Devilish as your reward. If you only read one Beverley to understand her reputation, make it Devilish: Rothgar's romance is the book fans press into everyone's hands.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start with Jo Beverley?

Start with An Arranged Marriage for her Regency world, or My Lady Notorious for the earlier Georgian Mallorens. Both are strong entry points and can be read independently.

What is the difference between the Company of Rogues and the Mallorens?

The Rogues are a Regency-era band of school friends. The Mallorens are set a generation earlier, in the Georgian 1760s, following a powerful family led by the Marquess of Rothgar. Different eras, both in Beverley's wider world.

Do you have to read Jo Beverley's books in order?

No — each book is a standalone romance. Within each series characters recur, so publication order gives the richest experience, but you can dip in anywhere.
